Industry Update: Fire Hose Reel – Copper Connection
Monday, 2 May 2016
The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) provides clarification of the requirements for the use of copper in the connection of fire hose reels to fire hydrant systems.
The relevant standard for the installation of fire hose reels as referenced in the National Construction Code is AS 2441 Installation of fire hose reels. Clause 6.5 of AS 2441 states that pipes and fittings used in hose reel systems shall comply with one of the following:
- AS 2419.1 Fire hydrant installations Part 1: system design, installation and commissioning, where connected to fire hydrant systems
- AS/NZS 3500.1 Plumbing and drainage Part 1: Water services, where connected to another water supply
- AS 2118.1 Automatic fire sprinkler systems Part 1: General systems, where connected to automatic fire sprinkler systems
Following discussion with industry stakeholders, including the fire services , receiving advice from the relevant Standards Australia technical committee, the VBA has establishedthat only the 'pipe and fitting' requirements of AS 2419.1 apply, when considering clause 6.5 of AS 2441. This permits the use of copper for the connection of fire hose reels to fire hydrant systems in buildings not protected by sprinklers without using additional protection.
