Updating and maintaining your registration

The VBA recently made changes to the title of the Annual Renewal Form to better reflect the language used in Part 11 of The Building Act 1993 (The Act) and to introduce practitioners to the new five-year registration renewal process.
The new five-year renewal process brings about changes to the way practitioners maintain and update their registration. The following information provides a summary of what practitioners need to do to maintain and update their registration and addresses some of the most common questions about the changes to the renewal and registration processes.
Updating and maintaining your registration – What do you need to do?
- Keep your registration(s) current by completing the annual fee and insurance check.
- Renew your registration every five years by completing the 'Five Year Registration Renewal Application Form'.
- If you are a practitioner registered before 1 September 2016 you are required to continue completing the annual fee and insurance check and wait until the VBA advises you to renew your registration for five years.
Annual fee and insurance check
The annual renewal process is now referred to as the 'Annual Fee and Insurance Check'. Practitioners must continue to pay an annual fee and provide proof that they have the required annual insurance cover.
The VBA will send registered practitioners a hard copy of the 'Annual Fee and Insurance Check' six weeks before it is due. Failure to complete the annual fee and insurance check by the due date will result in your registration being suspended.
Five-year registration renewal
Registration renewal now occurs every five years for all registered building practitioners.
The Act requires the VBA to conduct a thorough assessment every five years of a practitioner's eligibility to conduct business before it can renew an existing registration. Practitioners will need to complete and lodge the 'Five Year Registration Renewal Application Form' approximately five months before the end of the five-year registration period. The Five-Year Registration Renewal application is more detailed than the annual check because of the assessment requirements set out in the Act.
The VBA will send a letter to practitioners reminding them of their upcoming registration renewal and explaining how to complete the renewal process. Failure to complete the renewal form by the due date will result in registration expiring.
Practitioners registered before 1 September 2016
Practitioners registered before 1 September 2016 are required to renew their registration by the date set out in the Act. In February 2017 the VBA sent all practitioners registered before 1 September 2016 a notification email or letter advising them of the registration renewal date.
Practitioners who did not receive this notification can contact the VBA on 1300 815 127 to confirm their renewal date.
