Five year registration renewal

Changes to the Building Act 1993 which came into effect in 2016, introduced a maximum five-year registration period for registered building practitioners. This means all practitioners will be required to renew their registration every five years.

Practitioners who were registered before 1 September 2016 will need to transition to a five year registration period starting from 1 July 2017, while practitioners who were registered after 1 September will already be registered for five years.

The transition will take place over five years (from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2022), so not all practitioners will be affected at once.

The VBA will contact practitioners directly (by email or post) to explain exactly when they will need to renew their registration for a further five years and what the process will involve.

A 'Five Year Registration Renewal Application Form' will be available on the VBA website at the end of February 2017.
