VBA responds to Corkman Irish Pub demolition

Monday, 7 November 2016

The Corkman Irish pub, formerly the Carlton Inn Hotel, on the corner of Leicester and Pelham streets in Carlton was demolished on Sunday 16 October 2016. The VBA is working with the City of Melbourne Municipal Building Surveyor to conduct a joint investigation to determine any breaches of the Building Act 1993 (the Act) in regards to the demolition.

The VBA will be looking at whether there has been a breach of S.16, carrying out building work (which includes demolition work) without a building permit issued and in force.

Each breach related to this type of offending carries a maximum penalty of $388,650 for a corporation and $77,730 for an individual.

The VBA has the power to discipline a registered practitioner in relation to breaches such as these, including de-registration and suspension of registration.
