VBA’s key safety role behind the scenes at Victoria’s big events

Monday, 7 November 2016

As horse racing fans and VIPs take their places in the glamorous marquees at this year's Melbourne racing carnival it is unlikely they will be aware of the work that has gone on behind the scenes to ensure the safety of the temporary structures in which they are enjoying the festivities.

Behind the scenes of Victoria's event industry the VBA conducts inspections to ensure the compliance of marquees, seating stands, stages, and other temporary structures, and the subsequent safety of people using them.

The VBA assesses applications for occupancy permits for what are known as 'prescribed temporary structures' for the whole of Victoria and has a regular presence at the big venues in the months leading up to the state's big events including the Spring Racing Carnival, the Australian Open Tennis and the Formula One Grand Prix.
