Demolishers warned about major domestic building contracts and company registration

The VBA is aware that some demolition companies are entering into major domestic building contracts without holding company registration as a building practitioner.

The VBA reminds demolishers who carry out domestic building work worth more than $10,000 (e.g. demolition of a home) that section 29 of the Domestic Building Contracts Act 1995 prohibits a person (or company) from entering into a major domestic building contract unless they are appropriately registered with the VBA.

Building surveyors should be aware that section 24A of the Building Act 1993 prohibits them from issuing a building permit unless the major domestic building contract was entered into by a person or company registered with the VBA and whose registration authorises them to carry out the work.
