Servicing gas appliances? Check your registration or licence before you start

Plumber servicing hot water system
If you service or test household gas appliances, you must be registered or licensed in Type A Appliance Servicing work.

The Victorian Building Authority and Energy Safe Victoria have recently identified several gasfitters carrying out Type A Appliance Servicing work without holding accreditation in that class.

Type A Appliance Servicing work is a specialised class of plumbing that covers work relating to the internal cleaning, maintenance and adjusting of Type A gas appliances. It also covers any adjustment, repair or replacement of components in these appliances.

If you are servicing Type A gas appliances, you must be registered or licensed in Type A Appliance Servicing work to lawfully carry out that work.

Anyone found to be working outside the scope of their accreditation will be subject to investigation and enforcement action by the VBA. This may include appearing before a VBA Plumbing Inquiry or the Magistrates’ Court.

You can check whether you are accredited to carry out Type A Appliance Servicing work by looking at the back of your current VBA licence or registration card.
