AS/NZS 4234 transition period extended

The transition period for AS/NZS 4234: 2021 Heated Water Systems - Calculation of energy consumption has been extended.

The extension period for AS/NZS 4234 will now align with the transition period for new energy efficiency requirements proposed for the 2022 edition of the National Construction Code (NCC) and will commence on 1 October 2023.

Which standard should I continue to use for now?

The NCC will be available from 1 October 2022 and commence on 1 October 2023. During the transition period, plumbing practitioners complying with energy efficiency requirements in NCC 2019 and associated standards in Plumbing Regulations 2018 should continue to use AS/NZS 4234: 2008. This affects the installation of solar water heaters installed to meet the 6 Star building standard.

Why is the AS/NZS 4234 transition period being extended?

Extension of the AS/NZS 4234 transition period reflects the anticipated phase out of related requirements in the NCC:

Solar water heater requirements in Schedule 2 of the Plumbing Regulations 2018 are designed to support compliance with Victoria’s existing variation to residential energy efficiency requirements in NCC 2019, which requires either a solar water heater or a rainwater tank connected to all toilets be installed in all new Class 1 homes.

This existing variation will be removed from NCC 2022 to support the introduction of the proposed ‘whole of home’ energy usage requirement. This new approach will deliver better outcomes for energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as providing greater flexibility and choice in the selection of fixed appliances.
