This webinar, Research insights: Water damange and the risk of mould in buildings will provide an overview of the findings from research conducted by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA), in partnership with the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) and Victoria University, to identify patterns and clusters of problematic building work that could result in indoor mould.

The webinar, introduced by State Building Surveyor Andrew Cialini and presented by architectural scientist Dr Tim Law and VBA Principal Plumbing Specialist Anwar Gayed will increase practitioner awareness of causes and impacts of indoor mould in Victorian buildings, and how to reduce its likelihood through improved design, construction, plumbing, and inspection practices in high-risk areas.

2022

Our first webinar for 2022 for the Practitioner Education Series, was a continuation of the three-part series titled Plumbing Performance Solutions.

The Plumbing Performance Solutions series aims to provide a better understanding of the legislative framework and standards.

This session focussed on the stakeholder engagement required and the steps that must be followed, to ensure appropriate sign-off of the design brief before any plumbing installation work is commenced.

This session was presented by Senior Technical Advisors Neville Campbell, Warren James, and Ross Marshallsea.

Our inspection and services team include highly skilled and experienced registered building inspectors, building surveyors and licensed plumbers.

Glenn Wilson and Adam Falconer are team leaders within the Plumbing Audit and Inspections team at the VBA and discusses common issues found during plumbing inspections, including case studies.

The webinar addressed seismic detailing for residential and commercial buildings to improve performance and ensure safety in accordance with the National Construction Code. The webinar touches on historical earthquake events in Australia and the effects on buildings. It also summarises the regulatory framework for seismic provisions and emphasises their implementation.

The webinar explained structural response of different buildings during seismic excitations. It will cover timber, masonry, steel and concrete buildings and their vulnerabilities. It will provide observations, lessons learnt, and advice for better seismic detailing that covers structural and non-structural components.

The VBA's Building Audit Program is a regulatory initiative that seeks to identify and reduce non-compliant building work in Victoria.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the VBA carried out desktop audits of 46 Class 10b swimming pools located within 30 municipalities in Victoria. A total of 21 building surveyors were responsible for the sites selected.

This webinar details the findings of swimming pool audits, exploring what information is required and what's needed to ensure that swimming pools are compliant.

The first session in the Practitioner Education Series was presented by Dr Weng Poh, Principal Fire Safety Engineer, Victorian Building Authority.

Dr Poh explained how designers need to consider the essentials to ensure the NCC objectives are achieved and improve the standard of fire safety design by exploring the ‘why, what, and how’, including;

  • Why are performance provisions and design solutions important?
  • What is performance design all about and what does good practice look like?
  • What are the upcoming changes on 1 July and how they impact building practitioners?
  • How can we utilise the NCC and IFEG to ensure full coverage?

The second session in the Practitioner Education Series was presented by Keesje Wassink, Acting Manager, Building Audit, VBA.

TAs a result of the audit conducted by the VBA of domestic dwellings in bushfire prone areas, we have identified a quality gap in the documentation and assessment of proposed works to construct new dwellings in accordance with AS 3959.  This webinar will report the findings of the audit and discuss methods on how all practitioners involved in the design, certification, and construction of dwellings in bushfire prone areas can help to eliminate these issues. Mark will explore the areas of non-compliance and discuss how to best overcome these.

In this session in the Practitioner Education Series will be VBA's Conflict of Interest During Design, presented by Jeanette Barbaro, Partner, MinterEllison.

The Code of Conduct for Building Surveyors came into effect on 1 January 2021. The code specifies requirements for professional conduct, related to potential conflicts of interest, and clarifies the role of the Relevant Building Surveyor in the development and design of construction works. Jeanette explored the various requirements, presented practical examples of good practice and spoke about the obligations articulated in the Act.

Cladding Safety Victoria continues to make significant progress in its endeavours to support Owners and industry to rectify high-risk buildings affected by combustible cladding. Navigating the complex process of rectification has led to many lessons learnt.

In this session Bronwyn Weir left viewers with an enhanced understanding of the mandatory inspections process, who can inspect what, relying on other practitioners, the role of engineers, risk management and the ‘direction to fix’ process.

Bronwyn Weir was appointed by the Building Ministers Forum (BMF) to undertake an expert assessment of the effectiveness of compliance and enforcement systems for the building and construction industry as co-author of the Building Confidence Report (BCR), reflecting her reputation as a leading legal advisor on building regulations for more than 20 years.

Safety, compliance and amenity standards endure well beyond practical completion and good documentation is the foundation for optimal building lifecycle maintenance. In this session we took a step back and looked at the practical application of maintenance determinations and schedules to assist practitioners to interpret and apply the legislative requirements and support building owners, managers and maintenance providers to meet their obligations.

This was the first session of a series focused on the importance of document management and will help building surveyors, Building Designers, builders and owners get back to the basics that provide the greatest possible value.
