Building Surveyors' Conference

The Victorian Building Authority hosted the fifth annual Building Surveyors Conference on 16 August 2023. The conference saw industry leaders, innovators, and thinkers converge to navigate the complex landscape of our rapidly evolving sector.

Our agenda was packed with thought-provoking sessions on a diverse range of topics, including improving building health, new approaches to risk management, assessing the effectiveness of co-regulation, updates on building reform, and a presentation on the Building Manual.

The conference featured newly-appointed VBA CEO, Anna Cronin, and the State Building Surveyor, Andrew Cialini in addition to many other industry and subject matter experts.

Bronwyn Weir, Director, Weir Legal & Consulting hosted the fifth annual Building Surveyors Conference. Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny officially welcomed attendees to the Conference and reaffirmed that consumers are at the heart of Government’s work in regulating Victoria’s building system.

Bronwyn Weir, Director, Weir Legal & Consulting addressed the complexity of government regulators and the key issues of the industry and VBA CEO, Anna Cronin’s presentation informed the audience about the VBA’s key initiatives and objectives.

VBA State Building Surveyor Andrew Cialini’s presentation delved into some achievements from the past year and looked ahead to reforms and changes that would be implemented.

The conversation with VBA CEO and State Building Surveyor focused on identifying the current issues within the building industry and the actions taken to address these.

This session was facilitated by Bronwyn Weir with panel members Prof. Rebecca Bentley, Dr Nicole Johnston, Dr Tim Law and Dan O’Brien.

VBA Chief Risk Officer,Dr Todd Bentley’s presentation provided an overview of the VBA’s harms-based approach to risk management.

This session was facilitated by Bronwyn Weir with panel members Wayne Liddy, Steven Baxas, Andrew Cialini, Chris Webb and Claire Noone.

Andrew Grear and Nicholas Oatspresentations from the Department of Transport and Planning explored the practicalities of the proposed Building Manual and an update about building reforms.
