  On 1 December 2019 new laws to improve swimming pool and spa safety came into effect, introducing new registration, inspection, maintenance and compliance requirements for property owners.

• Pool and spa registration requirements

  It is now mandatory for owners of land where a swimming pool or spa is located to register their pool or spa with the relevant council.

• Pool safety barriers

  All swimming pools and spas capable of containing water greater than 300mm (30cm) must have a compliant safety barrier to restrict access to the pool area.

• Pool and spa inspections and compliance

  Pool and spa owners are now required to have their safety barriers inspected and to lodge a certificate of barrier compliance with their local council.

• Installing a new pool or spa

  You will need a building permit before installing a pool, spa or safety barrier. You may also need a planning permit or other permit.

  Victorian Government proposes new requirements for swimming pool and spa owners

  The Victorian Government is proposing to make the registration, inspection and certification of swimming pools and spas mandatory across the state.
