Fire protection registration and licensing

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) met with industry and government stakeholders on Friday, 26 October 2018, to discuss the proposed process for establishing restricted classes of registration and licensing for routine servicing of fire protection equipment, so that those competently carrying out this critical work can continue with certainty.

Stakeholders included the Master Plumbers, Plumbing and Pipe Trades Employees Union (PPTEU), National Fire Industry Association (NFIA), Fire Protection Association Australia (FPAA), Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), Country Fire Authority (CFA) and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).

The VBA is encouraged by the way in which all stakeholders have embraced the opportunity to enable a sector of the workforce to gain recognition for their competency and skills and to ensure they are appropriately registered or licensed moving forward.

At the meeting, industry and government stakeholders committed to working collaboratively, to assist in the development of restricted classes of registration and licensing.

The approach is welcomed by all and will enable the expedient transition of those who are currently working outside of the existing regulatory requirements.

The VBA is in the process of establishing a cross-sector working group to assist in the development of the requirements for assessment, so that those who can demonstrate appropriate competency can continue to work in the Fire Protection industry under the appropriate registration or licence.
