Three of Melbourne’s largest water corporations have reviewed and updated their Water Metering and Servicing Guidelines, providing industry and consumers with consistent standards across the Greater Melbourne area.

South East Water, City West Water and Yarra Valley Water conducted a joint review of the Guidelines in 2017, aiming to provide plumbers with greater clarity and information on water metering requirements for new and existing residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Following the review, which included an industry consultation period, the water corporations made several amendments to the Guidelines, which were published in an eighth edition of the technical standard.

All three water corporations greatly appreciated the feedback provided by industry during the consultation period.

Some of the changes in the updated Guidelines include:

  • expanded information on water meter locations and permissible deviations;
  • permitted check meter locations;
  • recycled water usage requirements for each water corporation;
  • updated water meter assembly drawings; and
  • advice from City West Water regarding their Main to Meter installation service.

The updated Guidelines are available on the websites of the three water corporations. Please familiarise yourselves with the Guidelines and ensure you refer to the most recent version when you are planning any works on cold and recycled water meter assemblies or fire services.

If you require any further information or have any suggestions for improving the Guidelines, please contact the appropriate water corporation.
