VBA Actions for the week ending 23 August 2019

Show Cause Notices

  • One Show Cause Notice issued for alleged breaches of the Building Act and the Domestic Building Contracts Act.

Investigations

  • Three warning letters issued.

Levy Audit

  • Seven site visits to train building surveyors.

Prosecutions

  • An unregistered building company was convicted and fined $60,000 by the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court for 12 breaches of the Building Act 1993 and Domestic Building Contracts Act 1995.
  • A man who carried out domestic building work while unregistered and without the required insurance was fined $7500 by the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for three breaches of the Building Act 1993. The man also promoted himself as a qualified builder.

Proactive Inspections

  • 197 inspections across 28 municipalities.
  • One Building Order – Minor Works issued.

Plumbing Audits

  • Audits: 149
  • Re-audits: 22
  • Inspections: 25
  • Re-inspections: 1

Statewide Cladding Audit

  • 22 inspections were completed, five within the City of Melbourne and 17 in other municipalities.
  • Four expert panels were conducted. From these, one building was rated extreme risk, with a recommendation to evacuate the building. Two other buildings were rated high risk and one building was rated moderate risk.
  • 16 inspections are scheduled for the week commencing Monday, 26 August 2019.
