Update for Domestic Builder-Manager transition arrangements

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) has recently written to practitioners about the class of Domestic Builder - Manager.

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) has recently written to practitioners about the class of Domestic Builder - Manager.

The VBA is aware that major domestic building contracts have been entered into by registered Domestic Builder - Managers in respect of which building permits are now being sought.

We have been working closely with practitioners and industry associations about how best to support those Domestic Builder - Managers to continue work as they look to transition to a new class of registration.

The VBA is also working with relevant Victorian Government departments and agencies to seek a resolution to this matter.

Whilst the VBA continues to work with relevant government agencies to reach a resolution, the advice to relevant building surveyors is that they can continue to issue building permits for building work in cases where there is a major domestic building contract between an owner and a registered Domestic Builder - Manager.

Domestic Builder - Managers cannot undertake the building work themselves and must continue using a registered builder.

It is important to note that the class of Domestic Builder- Manager will no longer exist after 30 June 2022. This means that those holding registration as a Domestic Builder - Manager need to be transitioning their registration to an alternative class now.

An Advisory Note with more information about the arrangements can be accessed here (PDF, 176.01 KB).
