To protect the health and safety of staff, practitioners and the broader community, our teams are now working remotely.
As a result, we are managing building registration enquiries via email at email@example.com. Please include your contact details.
If you have an upcoming examination or assessment scheduled, we will email you to re-schedule.
Registered building inspectors perform an important role in monitoring building standards in Victoria. They carry out inspections of building work on behalf of the relevant building surveyor.
There are three classes in which you can apply to register:
- Building Inspector (Limited)
- Building Inspector (Unlimited)
- Building Inspector (Pool safety)
Do you have the skills, knowledge and experience to apply for registration as a:
- Building Inspector (Limited) or Building Inspector (Unlimited) – see What is building inspection work?
- Building Inspector (Pool safety) – see What is building inspection (pool safety) work?
Forms should be saved to your computer. Open them in Acrobat Reader, type in the requested details (do not handwrite; it will take longer for us to process) and then print and sign. There's a checklist on the first page listing what is needed and outlining the application process.
Please note that the application form was updated on 28 July 2020, and any applications submitted from that date must be on the new form. If you use an old application form, it will delay the progress of your application.
Building Inspector (Limited)
Building Inspector (Unlimited)
Note that we will also consider applications for Building Inspector (Limited) (limited to inspecting all classes of building up to three storeys in height, excluding buildings with a basement, and a floor area of up to 500 square metres) from applicants with practical experience restricted to class 1 and 10 buildings. If you wish to be assessed on this basis, provide a cover letter with your application form setting out this request.
Experience statements and technical referee reports
As well as the application form, you must complete and submit both an Experience Statement and a Technical Referee Report for every category you seek to be registered in.
Building Inspector (Pool safety)
As well as the application form, you must complete a Technical Referee Report.
